Taking Place is a 2700 sq. ft. site-specific painting installation that reimagines PEM’s collections through hand-cut stencil paintings that create unexpected connections across time periods, cultures, and materials. The opening is Sept. 28th, 2019 along with PEM’s new expansion and renovation.
The work is not on display but instead immersive and oriented toward the everyday. The conversion of the Copeland/Crosby-Forbes galleries at PEM into an intimate environment incorporates the viewer into the space by inviting them to use the space for passage, to observe, to sit and chat- pastimes that slow down time. The references to an intimate drawing room, a sales catalogue and the history of decoration functions as an expansion of the gallery and of its role as a social venue. Plural zones of activity and of flexible narratives establish a perceptual field which simultaneously engages periphery and center, continually revealing multiple routes of entry and exit.
The repetition of curved formal shapes found within PEM’s extensive decorative arts collections are representative of a history of cultural exchange. A playful and optimistic aesthetic language, organic forms and even early connoisseurship provide both the object forms and overall composition for the project.
While many artist’s desire autonomy, this project required numerous collaborators in the form of the artist’s research, the curatorial team and studio assistants. The resulting relationship provides a platform for discussion and collaboration. The outcome of this process is the project: an installation as an open-ended experiment which amplifies the art institution’s function as a cultural laboratory.
